The talk will highlight the relationships plants and microorganisms form that supply plants with nutrients, protect plants from predators and provide vital ecosystem services. Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to observe live soil microbes in different trophic levels to highlight the diversity found in healthy soils.
The second part of this talk will have hands on components and address how to grow mushrooms using byproducts (straw, sawdust) and food waste (spent coffee grounds, spent brewery grains). Discussed will be the mushroom life cycles and the various cultivation steps from inoculation to harvest. Also addressed will be the role fungi play in nature and their vital role in nutrient cycling, supporting healthy soils and sequestering carbon in the soil.
