Enseigner la littératie en immersion au 2e cycle du primaire- ce que la recherche nous dit
In this workshop we will provide an overview of the science of reading, and structured literacy in Grade 4-6. We will look at how to teach in a systematic and explicit manner and the basic principles to help our students decipher the "code" by developing an understanding of phoneme-grapheme correspondences. We will also explore how to identify and intervene with struggling students. These are often mistakenly thought to be fluency problems, when in fact they are often related to word acquisition (especially academic/literate language at the 2nd grade level), retention, and comprehension. Time permitting, we will also explore what morphology is, and how to incorporate it into our lessons using strategies, tools and games.

The Science of Reading for French Immersion Teachers
This session will go into the basics for research based practices for teaching reading in a French immersion or second language context. We will look at the "Simple View of Reading", first proposed by Gough and Tunmer in 1986, and look at it's implications for teaching reading in a second language context. Next, we will discuss the skills required for skilled reading and strategies for teaching these skills. Finally, we will provide resources in order to help you get started on your Science of Reading journey.

Although this session will be geared towards French immersion teachers, it will provide many strategies for teaching reading in a second language context, relevant to teachers teaching ELL students. The session will be held in English so that it is accessible to all.
