How to teach financial literacy
At some point in your adult life, you may have experienced the harsh consequences of poor money management. It could be when you fell behind on rent payments or got in over your head with credit card debt. If we want youth to avoid those same pitfalls, then we need to start teaching financial literacy sooner rather than later.

Research, including influential work by David Whitebread and Sue Bingham of the University of Cambridge, suggests that many of our financial habits are set by age 7. If good habits aren’t formed early, it becomes harder and harder to point your offspring in the right direction. How, then, do educators teach the value of a dollar and other key financial lessons? Here are some basic steps teachers can take immediately to put them on the right path. This is part of the new curriculum this session.

Essential skills for teaching PE - Simple things that make a HUGE difference in your teaching -
Back to the basics - When I started teaching Physical Education, I had a partner teacher who loved to set me up to fail. He would set up kids to pretend to fight, fake an injury, leave the gym, sit down… all on his cue. Why? He was testing my basic skills to observe and adapt. This session is a practical session for teachers trained in PE or who have ended up teaching PE and need some tools to manage the gym, which if you're reading this, know that it is a very different skill set than a classroom. I will be sharing some of the Key Skills for the gym to engage all students, everyday in some key categories: feedback (zone approach so they think you're always watching), movement around the gym (why the middle is trouble), teams (student psychology), game modification (level the playing field), how to challenge all students and level the playing field between skill levels. I was mentored by some of the best, time to share the skills that make it easier.
THERE WILL BE A POST-CONVENTION VIDEO FOR THIS SESSION UNTIL MAY 30th.

How to Dance a Book
If you’re looking for a fun and creative way to engage your students in reading, you’ll love dancing a book. “Movement makes everything better.” It was this philosophy that lead to Christina getting curious about how reading a book could be a more active adventure. Kids sit so much and it’s exciting to have them experience the magic of reading on a more whole-bodied level. Dancing a Book is a wonderful opportunity for self-expression, creativity and outright joy. It’s the perfect exercise when you’ve got kids with lots of energy, or you want to build community through cooperation. The beauty of this activity is that it promotes literacy, both intellectual and physical, along with connecting movement to ideas, feelings and the written word. You’ll return to this activity over and over because your students will love it.

Come to this active workshop for a practical lesson that you can use with any book in any subject. Christina will be sharing her newly published book What Makes a Dancer? as a model for the session.

Ultimate Frisbee In a Day (or hour)
WHY ULTIMATE you may ask... Well, it is another great invasion game that has the potential to build teamwork quickly among all skill levels, introduce new motor patterns to challenge your top athletes, and the opportunity to build complex strategies while playing. This is an active session and you will be playing the game (or online I will be demonstrating all of the phases of the progression, find a space and play with me as much as you can… a bag full or disc would be helpful… round up some colleagues and pause and play). In the time we have we will cover a full progression through the skills, accompanying games (like box-timate and choo choo... so much fun), and the gameplay progression to supercharge the speed and teamwork of your class. Modifying field size, equipment and rules, you can get 2 weeks out of this session. Get to the games and teach from there is the name of this progression. Once you know the 1/10th scan, what a scoob and hammer is, who the handler is and the history of the game, it’s hard to end the unit.

THERE WILL BE A POST-CONVENTION VIDEO FOR THIS SESSION UNTIL MAY 30TH.
