Teslas in the Wild
We are in the middle of a transportation transformation. The electrification of transportation represents a huge revolution in more than just how we move things. How society views transportation, energy and efficiency will be permanently changed in the next decade. The changes that exist as society pursues electric cars represent a socio-scientific issue that is fertile ground for education. There are many subject-specific connections like energy, efficiency, battery chemistry, and motion that will be discussed, but Ian will also explore how electric vehicles can be used to explore aspects of the nature of science like data gathering, evidence, skepticism, and complexity.

How do YOU teach content in Food Studies (or CTS for that matter)?
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

SESSION REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED AS PREREGISTRATION AND PAYMENT WAS REQUIRED. SEE YOU AT NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23.

I have been teaching Food Studies for about 15 years and I am constantly revising, changing and trying new things. I feel very fortunate to be teaching such a dynamic course but I still sometimes find it hard to balance hands-on-learning with meeting all the curriculum objectives and effectively assess them. I know that many teachers in CTS, Fine Arts and other areas face similar dilemmas. How do you "teach" your classes? Today I would like to share some of my journey as a Food Studies teacher and as a CTS department head and I would love to dialogue with others as we take an opportunity to cook a few of my favourite dishes that I have done with my students over the years and have a few of them share their perceptions of alternative learning in classrooms. Come prepared to participate!

PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO ENSURE ENOUGH SUPPLIES ARE AVAILABLE.
Please send an email transfer of $10 to jeff.lerouge@rdcrs.ca to pay for the ingredients and secure your spot. NO REFUNDS. In your message, please indicate which session you are attending and if you are paying for someone else. Thank you.

This session will be held at Ecole Secondaire Notre Dame High School (50 Lees St, Red Deer, AB T4R 2P6).

The 48 Hour Film Challenge inserts a “Key” when the clock begins of things that must be included in the film. Paperless is Not a Pedagogy
The 1980’s promised us a paperless future. While we have still not seen the promise of flying cars and zero paper, we do have self driving cars and every person does indeed have a calculator in their pocket at all times. The last four decades have forced educators to rely even more heavily on technology to ensure their students are being taught, even when there is no access to the school building. Teaching with paper and teaching with technology have one thing in common, it begins with relationships. However, the approaches to teaching with technology are not the same as paper tasks, but the focus is the same, maximizing student engagement so the lessons and learning are relevant.

Fostering Scientific Literacy: Empower Student Decision Making in Today’s Society
Our hope as educators is that we can equip and empower our students with the skills necessary to navigate this world, especially in times of urgency and of uncertainty. When it comes to science related topics, we see a lack of science literacy in the general population, and in turn it affects their ability to make crucial decisions in their day to day lives. We must effectively equip students with science literacy skills to help them navigate crucial decision making moments. Teachers will receive support on how to foster scientific literacy in their classrooms, especially on topical controversial science topics like vaccines and climate change. Teachers will walk away with tips and tricks on how to approach these subjects with their students and will be given a guide with relevant resources.

Community Science in the Classroom: How to turn your students into real scientists
Anyone can be a community scientist (aka citizen scientist), which is a non-professional scientist that contributes real scientific research data. Community science fosters scientific literacy by engaging students in meaningful science research that addresses real-world issues and leads to scientific advancement. Through direct participation in scientific inquiry and exploration, students develop critical mindsets about the nature of scientific discovery. Community science engages many students that might not otherwise care by having them contribute to meaningful research. Teachers will get an introduction to community science, access resources to find projects that fit their curricula and go through an exercise to help integrate these projects into their classroom. Teachers will also leave with a digital toolkit that will enable them to take the lessons learned and apply them to their learning objectives in their classroom. Integrating community science in your classrooms can also help girls and gender diverse students better envision themselves as scientists and can be a tool to help address barriers to their participation in STEM fields. We will talk a bit about that in our presentation.

Ideally, participants would bring their own laptops or smartphones/tablets but the session will be doable without them.

Teachers will walk away with a basic understanding of what community science is, an introduction to some projects that they can integrate into their classes (with a detailed handout to take home with them), and how community science can help to engage students (especially those who are underrepresented in STEM fields) in real science.

For this session we will look at the skills that be aquired from playing games, both board games and video games. For the first half of the session we will look at cooperative board games and how they can develop skills of speaking and listening. I will also discuss how I use cooperative board games as a story starter. Then we will look at how video games can be used as a tool to learn the elements of story writing. By using video games in the classroom, students who may be reluctant readers or writers may become more engaged and understand how these skills can help in future careers such as video game design. If there is time maybe we can play some of the games.
